About Liechtenstein
Liechtenstein was founded in 1719 as a member of the Holy Roman Empire. It became a sovereign state in 1806 after the empire's dissolution. The principality experienced significant economic growth in the 20th century, transforming from a predominantly agricultural society into a hub for finance, industry, and international business.
Vaduz Castle
Vaduz Castle, perched on a hillside overlooking the capital village Vaduz, is a striking medieval fortress and the official residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Dating back to the 12th century, the castle has undergone numerous renovations and expansions, reflecting its long and storied history. Despite its prominent position and historical significance, Vaduz Castle is not open to the public. This restriction is due to its status as a private residence for the princely family, ensuring their privacy and security. Consequently, visitors can only admire the castle's impressive exterior and panoramic views of the surrounding Rhine Valley, making it a significant yet elusive symbol of Liechtenstein's heritage.
Only 5 Countries Are Smaller
Liechtenstein is the sixth smallest country in the world. The five smaller countries are:
Vatican City
Monaco
Nauru
Tuvalu
San Marino
Liechtenstein, with an area of about 160 square kilometers, is therefore one of the smallest sovereign states in the world.
Constitutional Monarchy
Politically, Liechtenstein is a constitutional monarchy headed by the Prince of Liechtenstein, who holds significant powers including vetoing legislation and dissolving parliament. The political system blends monarchical and democratic elements, with a unicameral parliament called the Landtag, consisting of 25 members elected by proportional representation. The government is headed by the Prime Minister, who, along with the cabinet, is appointed by the Prince based on parliamentary representation.
