The Schellenberg Castle Ruins

Dating back to the 12th century, these ancient ruins offer a glimpse into the medieval past of Liechtenstein. Visitors can explore the remnants of the castle and enjoy the scenic views from its elevated position.

  • The Upper Castle, also known as the "High Schellenberg" (Hohes Schellenberg), dates back to the early 12th century. It was built by the Lords of Schellenberg, a noble family that played a significant role in the region during the Middle Ages.

    Construction
The Upper Castle was strategically built on a hilltop, providing a commanding view of the surrounding area. Its elevated position was ideal for defense purposes.

    Architecture
The castle featured typical medieval defensive structures, including thick stone walls, a keep (main tower), and living quarters. Over time, additional buildings and fortifications were added.

    Decline
By the late 13th century, the castle's strategic importance began to wane. It suffered damage during various conflicts and was gradually abandoned. By the 16th century, it had fallen into ruin.

    Present Day
Today, the ruins of the Upper Castle are a popular tourist attraction. Visitors can explore the remnants of the walls and towers, and enjoy panoramic views of the Rhine Valley.

  • The Lower Castle was constructed slightly later than the Upper Castle, around the mid-13th century. It served a similar defensive and residential purpose.

    Construction
The Lower Castle was built by the same noble family, the Lords of Schellenberg. Positioned on a lower elevation compared to the Upper Castle, it provided additional security and oversight of the area.

    Architecture
Like its counterpart, the Lower Castle included robust defensive features. It had a central keep, surrounding walls, and various outbuildings.

    Role in Conflicts
Throughout the medieval period, the Lower Castle also faced attacks and sieges, reflecting the turbulent history of the region. It played a role in the local power struggles and feuds typical of the era.

    Abandonment
Similar to the Upper Castle, the Lower Castle's importance diminished over time. By the 15th century, it was largely abandoned and eventually fell into disrepair.

    Present Day
The ruins of the Lower Castle are accessible to visitors, who can explore the site and imagine the grandeur of the castle in its heyday.

The Biedermann House

A traditional wooden farmhouse that has been converted into a museum. It showcases the rural lifestyle and cultural heritage of the region, complete with period furnishings and exhibits on local customs.

Open to visitors every 1st and last Sunday of the month

  • The "Biedermann Haus" in Schellenberg, Liechtenstein, is a significant historical and cultural landmark. This farmhouse, originally built in 1518, is one of the oldest well-preserved wooden houses in the region. It showcases traditional construction methods and the lifestyle of the local farming community from the late Middle Ages to the early 20th century.

The house has been relocated several times, with major moves in 1687, 1793/94, and most recently in 1992/93. During these relocations, the original timber beams were meticulously numbered to ensure accurate reconstruction. The building is a "Kantholz-Blockbau" (square timber log construction) insulated with moss and lichen, featuring wooden pegs and nails instead of iron.

In 1994, the "Biedermann Haus" was opened to the public as the "Bäuerliches Wohnmuseum" (Rural Living Museum), operated by the Liechtenstein National Museum. The museum provides a glimpse into the rural living conditions around the year 1900, displaying period-appropriate furnishings and artifacts. The house was listed as a protected building in 1993 to preserve its historical significance.
